Securing that dream job is something we all aspire to tick off our bucket list! The internet has made it seem easier to find employment, although this has also led to a rise in online scams that exploit vulnerable job seekers.
There are many types of job scams doing the rounds today but the most common one is where scammers reach out with a fake job offer or vacancy, making false promises of employment in exchange for an application fee, security deposit, or perhaps personal information like bank details, PAN number, etc. only to extract confidential data or money.
These scams have become far more common in the past few years and are usually carried out using e-mail, text messages, or social media. For instance, a job fraud-related SMS would read something like ‘Dear customer, we are urgently recruiting for part-time jobs. Earn INR 5000-10,000 every day. Click here to add on WhatsApp 91XXX786XX.’ Clicking on such links will possibly lead you to fraudulent websites where you can be asked to pay money or share your bank details, OTP , etc.
So how can you be safe from this?
Avoid sharing confidential data
It is best to refrain from sharing personal information even if you are urged by the sender. A credible job recruiter will never ask for your bank details or PAN number.
Verify the sender’s identity
Always look into how credible the sender is by heading to the company’s official website to check for verified names, email addresses, and other details to be sure if the contact information is valid, before communicating any further.
Check for grammatical errors
Job scammers often tend to send emails or create websites that feature grammatical errors, uppercase/lowercase issues, or incorrect spellings to dupe users. An email address like jobsatdmi@gmail.com for example is questionable and is very likely to be a scammer.
Examine the message thoroughly
Scammers often approach job hunters with fake offer letters, opportunities to appear for an interview, or even pose as recruiters from employment portals to build trust and get them to pay a certain amount. If the job offer has little to no relevant information or an unreasonably high pay compared to the position, avoid it at all costs.
Do not pay in advance
Credible job recruiters will never ask you to pay money in exchange for a job offer. Refrain from making any unverifiable payments in the name of ‘job training charges’ or ‘application fee’. It is likely to be a scam. At DMI Finance, for instance, we do not ask for a security deposit, application fee, or any miscellaneous charges whatsoever when recruiting for a position.
