Are Unsubscribe Buttons on Email a New Trick by Scammers?

The idea of stealing money illegally through online hacking or by using fake emails is something most of us have heard of. But with this new trick, scammers are sending out unreliable emails that feature an unsubscribe button which could end up putting your money at risk.

Typically, spam emails are harmless and are sent to simply sell a product or service. Phishing or scam emails on the other hand often have a harmful intent to obtain personal information or carry out cyber-attacks. Scammers send these emails that convince people to click on a link or button, which can then result in a variety of scams..

There have been multiple cases of online scams where users have been sent unverified emails that appear as though they are from a trusted entity asking them to pay money, claim a refund or share sensitive data over an email, only to be duped by scammers..

They may pose as a bank, investor, or from a financial institution and send you phishing emails that are made to look authentic. You are likely to find titles like ‘Thanks for your account subscription’ or ‘Your membership is activated’, or something that will make you want to click on the unsubscribe button..

If you click on this button, it is a confirmation to the scammers that the email address belongs to a real person. They are then likely to follow it up by a series of fraudulent emails that could lead to several other scams..

How can you stay safe from harmful spam emails?

Always check the source of the email

Try to avoid clicking on any unverified links or buttons if you are not sure about the authenticity of the sender. For instance, at DMI Finance, we never send emails asking for verification using personal details such as passwords or PIN numbers. For us, data security and user privacy are top priorities.

Make use of the spam option

One of the best ways to deal with unidentified senders is to turn on your email provider’s ‘spam’ feature which will report the mail as junk. If you are to receive any such emails in the future, the spam feature will automatically block the sender, keeping your inbox free of potentially harmful emails.

Ensure that your system is updated

Often, scammers can place a tracking cookie on your computer/mobile browser, which can give them direct access to your personal data. By keeping your computer systems and browsers fully updated, you could help prevent such attacks to a certain extent.

Additionally, downloading any files or attachments from unverified senders could also be a huge threat to your privacy which is why it is always best to avoid such emails or immediately report them as spam..

At DMI, we care about user security and promise to deliver the best financial solutions, assuring that you remain protected and well-informed at all times.
