In an unscheduled presser today, the RBI governor announced a slew of targeted measures to support select segments impacted by the second COVID wave. These measures aim to provide relief to individuals, small businesses, and MSMEs by reopening restructuring schemes and new liquidity schemes. It also announced an on-tap liquidity window of Rs 50,000 crore for a wide range of borrowers in health/COVID-related work fields. Other measures such as relaxing over-draft limits for state governments and the second leg of the G-SAP 1.0 programme were also announced. Given the uncertainty associated with the second COVID wave, the RBI is expected to provide relief in a calibrated manner while keeping options for stepped-up policy support as the situation unfolds.
